Bone augmentation

A stable foundation for implants

Where a tooth has been missing for a long time the bone gradually recedes. If there is not enough of it an implant would not be stable enough. In such cases the answer is to build the bone up – augmentation.

Bone grafting (augmentation)

When is bone grafting needed?

  • where a tooth has been missing for a long time
  • where bone loss is significant
  • before a planned implant
  • after an extraction, where we want to preserve the volume of bone

We assess every case individually using 3D diagnostics.

How does the procedure work?

  1. 3D examination and planning
  2. Placing bone material where it has been lost
  3. Stabilisation and the healing phase
  4. Implant placement once healing is complete

The procedure is done under local anaesthetic and is painless. Healing proceeds gradually over several months, so that firm, good-quality bone forms.

Modern materials and safe procedures

  • we use proven bone materials and gentle surgical techniques
  • we look after the health of the soft tissue and the long-term stability of the result
  • building the bone up properly markedly improves the success of implantation and how long it lasts

Frequently asked questions

Bone augmentation is a surgical procedure that adds to or restores the volume of the jawbone. It is done mainly where there is not enough bone to place dental implants. Special materials are used that encourage the regeneration and growth of the patient's own bone.

Bone is lost most often after a tooth is lost, from wearing dentures over a long period, or as a result of inflammatory disease. Without enough bone an implant cannot be placed safely and stably. Augmentation creates the right conditions for implantation afterwards.

The procedure is done under local anaesthetic, so it is comfortable and painless for the patient. Mild swelling or sensitivity may follow; both are normal and settle over a few days.

Healing time depends on the extent of the procedure and on the individual's capacity to regenerate. In most cases it takes several months, during which the material gradually fuses with the patient's own bone.

An implant can be placed once the bone has healed and strengthened sufficiently. In some cases implantation can be done at the same time as augmentation, but in most situations it is done in two stages, as the dentist recommends.

Biocompatible materials are used that encourage natural bone growth. They may be synthetic or of biological origin. The choice depends on the particular situation and the individual treatment plan.

Once healing is complete the newly formed bone becomes a stable part of the jaw. With good hygiene and regular check-ups it keeps its function for the long term and allows implants to be anchored safely.

As with any surgical procedure, bone augmentation carries a small risk of complications such as infection or delayed healing. If you follow the dentist's instructions and take proper care, treatment is uneventful in most cases.
