When a tooth needs a filling
Decay gradually damages the enamel and dentine of a tooth. If it is not caught and treated in time it can spread deeper and cause pain or inflammation of the pulp.
The aim of a filling is to remove the affected tissue and replace it with a material that bonds firmly to the rest of the tooth and restores its original shape.
Types of filling
We most often use photocomposite materials, which can be matched to the natural shade of the tooth, and glass-ionomer materials, which have their place mainly in specific cases.
How the treatment works
- We examine the tooth and determine the extent of the decay, with an X-ray if needed.
- We numb the area with a local anaesthetic.
- We remove the damaged tooth tissue.
- We apply the filling material and cure it into the tooth's original shape.
- We adjust the bite and polish the filling.
The extent of the damage and the number of surfaces
Both the price and the extent of treatment depend on how many tooth surfaces have to be replaced – that is, whether it is a single-surface, two-surface or larger filling, or a bigger build-up of the tooth.

Treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic, so the procedure itself should not be painful. Once the anaesthetic wears off the tooth may be slightly sensitive, which usually passes quickly.
How long a filling lasts depends on its size, the material and how the teeth are cared for. With good hygiene and regular check-ups a filling can last many years, though in time it may need replacing.
Photocomposite fillings can be matched to the colour of the tooth, and we use them mainly on visible as well as functional surfaces. We tend to choose glass-ionomer materials in specific cases instead, for example for fillings in the area of the tooth root.
A filling is replaced mainly when it is damaged, no longer seals, has changed colour, or new decay has formed underneath it. We check the state of fillings at every routine examination.
The effect of a local anaesthetic usually wears off within a few hours of treatment. During that time it is better to avoid eating, so that you do not accidentally bite the numbed tissue.
We recommend waiting until the anaesthetic has worn off completely, so that you do not bite your cheek or lip. With some materials we recommend avoiding harder food on the first day after treatment.
