Prevention and aesthetics
Dental hygiene and teeth whitening
Regular dental hygiene is one of the foundations of dental care. It helps prevent both decay and gum disease, and it is also the first step before whitening.

Prevention that saves both time and teeth
Even with thorough cleaning at home, plaque gradually builds up on the teeth and turns into tartar, which you cannot remove yourself at home. During dental hygiene we remove these deposits and so reduce the risk of gum inflammation and of tooth decay.
The visit also includes a check on the condition of your teeth — that way we catch any problem before it causes pain or calls for more extensive treatment.
What dental hygiene involves
A routine visit mainly involves:
- removal of plaque and tartar
- polishing the teeth
- a check on the condition of the gums
- instruction in the right brushing technique at home
How a visit works
- First we check the condition of your teeth and gums.
- We remove plaque and tartar.
- We polish the teeth and, where appropriate, also air-polish them (Air flow).
- We advise you how to look after your teeth at home and arrange a date for the next check-up.
Teeth whitening options
Teeth whitening is an aesthetic procedure that lightens the shade of the enamel. It should be preceded by dental hygiene, because whitening acts only on the tooth itself, not on plaque or tartar on its surface.
We distinguish mainly two approaches:
- in-office whitening supervised at the practice
- at-home whitening using custom-made trays
We will assess whether whitening is suitable for you, and what result to expect from it, after examining your teeth.

In general we recommend professional dental hygiene once every six months, and in some cases more often – for example where tartar builds up readily or where braces are worn. The exact interval depends on the condition of your teeth and gums.
Routine dental hygiene is painless in most cases, or mildly uncomfortable if the teeth are sensitive or the gums inflamed. That sensitivity usually subsides quickly after treatment.
Teeth whitening carried out under professional supervision is generally safe. Temporary sensitivity can appear during and after treatment and usually passes within a few days.
How long the whitening effect lasts depends on diet, smoking and dental care. In general it lasts from a few months to about two years, and it may need to be repeated in time.
Whitening is generally not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, for children, or for patients with markedly sensitive teeth or untreated decay. We assess whether the procedure is suitable after examining your teeth.
Yes. Whitening acts on the enamel itself, not on the plaque or tartar sitting on its surface, so it should be preceded by dental hygiene that removes those deposits.
